Shirley Jean Rogers, age 75, of Seymour, TN, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, April 7, 2025.
Shirley was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, the daughter of Peggy Knight and Albert Turpin. She was a devoted follower of God, and her faith guided every part of her life — especially the way she loved people. Shirley had a gift for making everyone she met feel special. She was a lifelong learner, a true social butterfly, and someone who believed deeply in the power of kindness.
She lived a beautiful and full life — marrying her high school sweetheart, Ronald (Ronnie) Rogers, becoming a registered nurse, and working her way up to manager at the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center. But her proudest role of all was being a mother and grandmother.
Her family was her world. She was a loving mother to her daughter, Rhonda Stone, and her son, Michael (Mickey) Rogers. And she treasured being "Mimi" to her granddaughters, Barley Stone and Chloe Stone, helping to raise them from the very beginning. Shirley also had a special place in her heart for her beloved cat, Gus Gus. He was her constant companion, her shadow, and her source of comfort and laughter every single day. Wherever Shirley was, Gus Gus was sure to be close by — curled up beside her or sitting on her lap, always ready to keep her company. She also cherished her lifelong friendship with her best friend, Joan Mathes.
Shirley was known for many things — her love of learning, her passion for art and Hallmark movies, her deep faith, and her ability to show up for anyone who needed her. Whether it was a small favor or a big moment, she was always there. She loved sharing meals, good conversation, and never turned down dessert. She read her Bible constantly and took great joy in celebrating the biblical feast days.
Those who knew Shirley also knew she could be a little stubborn — but that determination made her a strong mother, grandmother, and friend. In her final days, she was looking forward to spring and summer, to flowers blooming, and to sitting on the patio with a glass of wine. Her passing came unexpectedly, but we know she is now resting peacefully in the arms of God.
She would want us to keep her close — to think of her when we see a ripe tomato, admire beautiful art in nature, or gather together to celebrate a feast day. She would want us to laugh, to love hard, and to take care of one another.
Shirley is survived by her brothers, David Turpin and Brian Underwood; her children, Rhonda Stone and Michael (Mickey) Rogers; her beloved grandchildren, Barley Stone and Chloe Stone; her son-in-law, George Stone; and her daughter-in-law, Natalie Rogers.
She is preceded in death and reunited in Heaven with her mother, Peggy Knight; her father, Albert Turpin; and her former husband and lifelong friend, Ronald (Ronnie) Rogers.
Shirley Jean Rogers will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family. She will be cremated and kept close to home — surrounded always by love, never alone.
One of Shirley’s favorite Bible verses was from Isaiah 40:31 — a beautiful reminder of strength, faith, and God’s everlasting love. It is a verse that brought her comfort, and one her family hopes will bring comfort to all who loved her: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." — Isaiah 40:31
In her memory, the family encourages everyone to take a moment to appreciate life’s simple pleasures: a ripe summer tomato, beautiful art in nature, a heartfelt meal with loved ones, and the joy of gathering together.
Shirley's obituary was submitted by her loving family.
