Albert Briggs Obituary

Albert Morgan Briggs, fondly known to all as "Ole Smoky," was born on June 13, 1939, in Friendship, Tennessee. He peacefully passed away on October 26, 2024 in Sevierville, TN, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains he so dearly loved.

Graduating from Tech High School in Memphis, TN, in 1957 set the stage for a life filled not only with education but with service and dedication. Albert was a proud veteran who served in the US Marine Corps in 1958, where he honed his skills as a master sniper and gunner during the Vietnam War, remaining in service until 1964. His commitment to duty and his country shaped much of who he became—a person of strength, resilience, and adventure.

Albert's career in retail sales was complemented by his generous spirit. He enthusiastically shared his love for the outdoors as a volunteer Scout Master until 2005, instilling valuable lessons in the young minds he guided. An avid outdoorsman, he dedicated much of his free time as a National Park Volunteer, building a profound connection with nature that he eagerly passed on to others.

His proudest achievements included being the first Ridge Runner in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Albert completed an impressive 97 trips to Mount Leconte Lodge, and he took on the challenge of hiking the entire 2197-mile Appalachian Trail. He was a true mountain man at heart; if it didn’t involve the majesty of the mountains, his interest waned. His passion and eagerness to teach about the mountains brought joy to those around him.

Family was of utmost importance to Albert, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He is survived by his beloved sister Joyce Foster, and brother James Briggs, Jr., who, like countless others, will greatly miss his presence. His four children—Matthew M. Briggs, Brian S. Briggs, Clayton L. Briggs, and Amy L. Gitter—carry forward his legacy, along with 11 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren who shared in his warmth and wisdom. Each family hiking trip was a memory etched in the hearts of his loved ones, always accompanied by his delectable coconut cakes that were synonymous with love and family gatherings.

Albert is now reunited in eternal peace with his parents, James and Mary Briggs, Sr., who loved him deeply. While the pain of his absence is felt immeasurably, the memories of shared laughter, life lessons, and love will forever resonate in the lives he touched.

A graveside service to honor Albert will be held on November 29, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Rose Hill Cemetery in Humboldt, TN. As we remember Ole Smoky, let us carry forward his love for nature, family, and the simple joys of life, ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire generations to come.
